Aldrig to ens.
Hetsch.
Royal Copenhagen
By the time the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain factory was founded on 1 May 1775 under the patronage of Queen Juliane Marie, more than one hundred years of persistent efforts had gone into to eliciting the secret of porcelain making from the Chinese. Since then its name has become synonymous with the famous Blue and White patterns it produces. Its instantly recognisable trademark represents the three main waterways of Denmark, the Sound and the Great and Little Belts.
Royal Copenhagen has been manufacturing Blue Fluted Dinnerware continuously since 1779. It is Royal Copenhagen's Pattern #1, and it the oldest pattern still in production andywhere in the world today. The "Fluted" part of the name refers to the surface of the pieces, which are molded to included a subtle "Fluting", almost as though woven from straw. The Blue Immortelle pattern is then hand painted on top of this subtlely textured surface. The pattern is available in Plain, Half Lace (as listed below), and Full Lace. Both the Half Lace and the Full Lace have a lace like pattern molded and painted into the edge of each piece. Full lace may have the Lace pattern pierced (the hallmark of Full Lace, found mostly on the plates and platters), or have more lace (at both the top AND bottom of cups, for example), or have the outside edge of the piece shaped to match the lace pattern (as with Full Lace saucers, that are delicately shaped but not pierced).
In 1990, Royal Copenhagen assigned new inventory numbers to all dinnerware items still in production. This does NOT indicate any change in the size or shape of the items, or in the manufacturing process; it merely indicates when the items was produced. Items that were discontinued before 1990 do not have a new item number; items that were introduced after 1990 do not have an old item number. But most commonly used items have both an old number and a new number, indicated below. All new dinnerware carries the new numbers, and all new price lists show only the new numbers. I have included both numbers below to help identify each item. I do not differentiate between the new numbers and the old numbers. If one or the other is important to you, please let me know and I will try to accomodate your requests, although the price may be somewhat higher if I have to locate pieces from other suppliers.
All of these pieces are hand painted, hand finished, hand glazed, and hand signed by the individual painter. Over the course of years, there has been changes in the source of the clay, in the composition of the glazes, and in the kilns used to fire the items, in addition to all of the many individual painters who have worked on this pattern. Naturally, there will be minute variations in size, color, and detail of each piece that is produced in this manner; that is part of the character and charm of hand painted china.
